John Piper was asked: “Is the Doctrine of Total Depravity Biblical”

His reply is both a challenge and an encouragement!

Yes. And one thing I meant was that all of our actions (apart from saving grace) are morally ruined. In other words, everything an unbeliever does is sinful and thus unacceptable to God. I said that one of my reasons for believing this comes from 1 Corinthians 10:31.

“Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

I asked,

”Is it sin to disobey this Biblical commandment?”

Yes.

So I draw this somber conclusion: It is sin to eat or drink or do anything NOT for the glory of God. In other words, sin is not just a list of harmful things (killing, stealing, etc.). Sin is leaving God out of account in the ordinary affairs of your life. Sin is anything you do that you don’t do for the glory of God. But what do unbelievers do for the glory of God? Nothing.

Therefore everything they do is sinful. That is what I mean by saying that, apart from saving grace, all we do is morally ruined. Some of you then asked the practical question: Well, how do you “eat and drink” to the glory of God? Say, orange juice for breakfast? One answer is found in 1 Timothy 4:3-5:

“[Some] forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.”

Orange juice was “created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe the truth.”

Therefore, unbelievers cannot use orange juice for the purpose God intended—namely, as an occasion for heartfelt gratitude to God from a truth heart of faith. But believers can, and this is how they glorify God.

Their drinking orange juice is “sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.” The word of God teaches us that the juice, and even our strength to drink it, is a free gift of God (1 Corinthians 4:7; 1 Peter 4:11).

The prayer is our humble response of thanks from the heart. Believing this truth in the word, and offering thanks in prayer is one way we drink orange juice to the glory of God.

The other way is to drink lovingly. For example, don’t insist on the biggest helping. This is taught in the context of 1 Corinthians 10:33,

“I try to please all men in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved” (RSV). “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1).

Everything we do—even drinking orange juice—can be done with the intention and hope that it will be to the advantage of many that they may be saved. Let us praise God that we have escaped by his grace from the total ruin of all our deeds. And let us do everything, whether we eat or drink, to the glory of our great God! These words paint funny pictures in the mind, of people walking around with bits of wood sticking out of their eyes, but in reality, if anyone had a large block of wood hanging off their faces they would be in need of some serious help!!!

This is the thrust of the problem that Jesus identified in humanity… do you seek to help your brother? Then deal with your own sin first… or is it that you cannot see the plank in your eye? Why and how can one not notice a large impediment like that???

Being “in Christ Jesus” is a stupendous reality. It is breathtaking what it means to be in Christ. United to Christ. Bound to Christ. If you are “in Christ” listen to what it means for you:

In Christ Jesus you were given grace before the world was created. 2 Timothy 1:9, “He gave us grace in Christ Jesus before the ages began.”
In Christ Jesus you were chosen by God before creation. Ephesians 1:4, “God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world.”
In Christ Jesus you are loved by God with an inseparable love. Romans 8:38–39, “I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
In Christ Jesus you were redeemed and forgiven for all your sins. Ephesians 1:7, “In Christ we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses.”
In Christ Jesus you are justified before God and the righteousness of God in Christ is imputed to you. 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For our sake God made Christ to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
In Christ Jesus you have become a new creation and a son of God. 2 Corinthians 5:17, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” Galatians 3:26, “In Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.”
In Christ Jesus you have been seated in the heavenly places even while he lived on earth. Ephesians 2:6, “God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”
In Christ Jesus all the promises of God are Yes for you. 2 Corinthians 1:20, “All the promises of God find their Yes in Christ.”
In Christ Jesus you are being sanctified and made holy. 1 Corinthians 1:2, “To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus.”
In Christ Jesus everything you really needed will be supplied. Philippians 4:19, “My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
In Christ Jesus the peace of God will guard your heart and mind. Philippians 4:7, “The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
In Christ Jesus you have eternal life. Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
And in Christ Jesus you will be raised from the dead at the coming of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:22, “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.” All those united to Adam in the first humanity die. All those united to Christ in the new humanity rise to live again

How do we get into Christ?

At the unconscious and decisive level it is God’s sovereign work: “From God are you in Christ Jesus” (1 Corinthians 1:30).

But at the conscious level of our own action, it is through faith. Christ dwells in our hearts “through faith” (Ephesians 3:17). The life we live in union with his death and life “we live by faith in the Son of God” (Galatians 2:20). We are united in his death and resurrection “through faith” (Colossians 2:12).

This is a wonderful truth. Union with Christ is the ground of everlasting joy, and it is free.

Andy spoke on Nehemiah chapter 8 talking about the Israelites gathering in the square after rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. He compared it to the church: the people of God gathering together in unity, hearing and being taught from God’s word and then celebrating and worshipping God. Andy’s word for DCBC was ‘The joy of the Lord is your strength’. He then went on to talk about Jesus being joyful quoting Luke 10v21 and Hebrews 8v1.

The church meets at 11am each Sunday morning at the Welcome Hall on Fore Street in Devonport. It is a family service and we have a creche as well as children’s church. We meet to pray shortly before the service at 10:30am and all are welcome to join in. We also provide an opportunity to pray with individuals after the service, just speak with any of our church leaders. We also put our sermons online.

We are a young church in Devonport, Plymouth with a heart for our community. We meet together for worship and prayer and to learn more about Jesus Christ. Prayer We meet each Monday evening and pray for the church and the mission of the Church. We seek to bring the community to the Lord in prayer and seek His guidance in our outreach and love for them. Worship Our worship team are valued as they provide a great time of corporate worship. Pastoral The team are particularly committed to caring pastorally for the church member, attendees and the wider community in the following ways: Visiting members who are unable to make it to church on a regular basis Providing support for and coming alongside members who have specific difficulties, if necessary referring them to appropriate agencies Operating a food store. Cooking for families in temporary difficulty Children and youth We believe it is our calling and God’s commission to bring up our children in the knowledge of the Lord. The church meets each Sunday morning at the Welcome Hall on Fore Street, Devonport, PL1 4DN: View My Saved Places in a larger map The church office is located just a short distance away at 22 Granby Street, Devonport, PL1 4BH. It’s open Monday to Thursday between 10:30am and 12:30pm. The building is also used for a variety of church activities including house groups, prayer and Little Fish.

In 1997 Devonport Community Baptist Church began in the hearts of a group of individuals from Mutley Baptist Church, Plymouth, and grew into a vision of mission and outreadch in the Mount Wise and Devonport area. Seven people came together to form a prayer meeting that began the process of a church plant. Very soon, the local council invited the leader of Plymouth Christian churches to plant a church in the Devonport area. At the same time we were given funding for a the training of a new pastor, Nathan Fisher, by an anonymous gift through Mutley Baptist Church. The church held it’s first service on 20th September 1998 and given the use of the Neighbourhood Centre in Mount Wise and it was known then as Mount Wise Baptist Church. After a year the church had outgrown the centre and temporarily moved to a local primary school before moving to it’s present meeting place, Welcome Hall and became Devonport Community Baptist Church. Rev Nathan Fisher was one of the founding members of DCBC. He trained at Bristol Baptist College and began at DCBC as a student pastor. Nehemiah is away on official business with the King in the Capital of Assryia and while he was away the the nobles and those who were under oath to Tobiah has brought him into the city, where the High Priest allowed him to take up residence in one of the huge store rooms that were set aside for the tithe and for the sacred things of the temple. Patrick challenged us on the question ‘What is our church going to be?’ He spoke of the situation that Nehemiah and the Israelites having rebuilt the walls: the rich Jewish nobles and rulers were exploiting the poorer Israelites by taking them as slaves, getting them to sell their land and charging interest. The poor people were on the edge of a riot and Nehemiah had to decide what to do: does he stand against his peers(the nobles and rulers) and speak up for those that were being oppressed? Having rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, was Nehemiah going to allow it to be a place of persecution and imprisonment for the poor and needy or was it going to be a place of safety and freedom from persecution? Is our church going to be a place of imprisonment or freedom for those who enter into its wall?

Mathew preached through chapter 2 of the Book of Nehemiah: Nehemiah, on hearing the news of the devastation of Jerusalem’s walls and gates desired to do something about it, but what could he do? As Nehemiah position of Cup-Bearer to the king and the responsibility that went along with it he began to realise that he only had one option, to risk his life and speak with the King. Nehemiah was grief-stricken when he heard about the walls and cried out to God. The opportunity did not happen as soon as he wanted (on the same day he heard the news!) God made Nehemiah wait for four months before giving him the opportunity to talk to the king. God’s wisdom in the delay meant that Nehemiah could consider prayerfully and plan what he needed to do, what he needed to say to the King and how he could accomplish the mamouth task of rebuilding the walls and taking away the discrace and the Same upon the God of Israel. When the time came it was not Nehemiah’s asking but the Kings that broke the silence. The king asked Nehemiah why he was so sad, a sadness of the soul… this opened the door to his adventure and showed God’s power and care for him and the Israelites. But it was only after four months of grieving, fasting and praying that the king noticed Nehemiah’s sadness and asked him what was wrong. Nehemiah was able to tell the king what he wanted and the king gave him everything he asked for. This demonstrated God’s sovereignty over all men, Kings and cup-bearers! The message brought out the faithfulness of God to his promises and the fulfilment of prophecy through human agents. God promised that because of sin and becoming like the World he would scattere the Israelites, but He also promised that when the time came He would cause a remnant to return to Jerusalem and it is in partial fulfilment to these promises that we learn in Nehemiah, God is Sovereign, He is in control and yet he responds to the crys and the prayers of His people. Finally, Jesus Christ said in the New Testament, that He would build His Church… and the Gates of Hell would not prevail against it! God is building up Devonport Baptist Church … he has not abandoned us, and we will see his Glory!

The reading was John chapter 21 where Jesus visits His disciples on the beach after His resurrection and cooks breakfast for them. Malcolm spoke of Peter being in a place of Spiritual denial having rejected Jesus so publicly. The message was that the Christian life isn’t one of no problems, but that things happen which can cause us to step away from God. We have been saved so we are not in the Enemy’s camp, but we are also not living fully in the presence and promises of God. This is a dangerous place to be in and we can be lead deeper into sin and further away from God. Where once we had fellowship with God, in this place there is only numbness. Satan is the one who leads us into this darkness and Jesus is the only way back into the fullness of God’s blessings. As we see with Peter in the passage, Jesus is the healer, restorer and redeemer.

He gave many reasons why building people up to vital to church life, explained the most important reason is that it is part of the process of being made more like Christ.

John’s message was ‘don’t despise the small things’ and he challenged us to ask ‘what does God want to do with me?’ because with God, individuals can change the world.
